In the early twentieth century, the Bengali Muslim community looked to its historical background in search of its true identity. Abu Mohamed Habibullah (1911-1984), a well-known essayist and a thinker, is one of the representatives of the Bengali Muslims. In various research articles, he has explored the nation, nationality and nation-state; and on the basis of this exploration, he has identified the Bengali Muslims as a distinctive and self-established nation separate from both Hindus and external Muslims in Bengal, aiming to alleviate their identity frustration. Habibullah has analyzed the trajectories of the history of Bengali Muslims to locate the perspectives of their identity crisis. In order to know the identity of the Bengali Muslims, he has explored the history and tradition of this community along with the origin and development of the Bengali Muslims. In the formation of Bengali Muslim identity, he has emphasized on the ethnic and linguistic identity, along with the proper reflection of Muslim culture in literature. He has considered it important to build Muslim culture as influential. This article examines how Habibullah looks at ‘Bengali Muslim’s Self-identity’ in the selected essays in his book tiled Samaj Sanskriti o Itihas (2017) and how he views the overall history of Bengali Muslims-at the same time, how he identified the main reasons for the crisis of Bengali Muslim’s self-identity has been discussed. The article analyzes how he demonstrates the ways to overcome these crisis. Along with this, the originality and limitations of his views have also been evaluated. The textual analysis method has been adopted for the study. Moreover, a comparative method has been followed in order to compare Habibullah’s thoughts with those of other essayists from the specified period.
