In Bangladesh, where half of the population is female, women are neglected and oppressed in most cases. They have to endure deprivation in all social, economic and family areas. In Bangladeshi short stories, the mental anguish and psychologycal instability of these oppressed women are especially visible. Short story writers have made clear the causes of women’s mental anguish and mental disorders in their stories. The stories of Shawkat Osman (1917-1998), Alauddin Al Azad (1932-2009), Hasan Azizul Haque (1939-2021), Akhtaruzzaman Ilyas (1943-1997), Selina Hossain (b.1947), Shahidul Zahir (1953-2008) and Manju Sarkar (b.1953) reveal the conflicts, jealousy, hatred, dissatisfaction and oppression of women. The disrespect of women by selfish, weak-minded men, the inability to trust women in important responsibilities and the neglect of women by family members create a strong sense of pain in women’s mental instability. In this article, we will try to determine the cause-effect relationship of the mental complexities and mental problems of women in Bangladesh in the light of some notable stories.
