Abstract:

The Mughal rule in Bengal, established with the victory at the battle of Rajmahal in 1576 and lasted till the British occupation of power of the sub-continent in 1858, experienced the construction of numerous religious and secular buildings under the royal patronage and private initiatives in different capital cities of Rajmahal, Dhaka and Murshidabad as well as in various smaller administrative units. Of these Mughal buildings in Bengal, erected in combination of the pre-Mughal Sultanate architecture of the land and North Indian building styles, a large majority are mosques. The surviving examples of these Mughal mosques of Bengal show the varieties of types cited in the body of the paper. The present study, made on the basis of the field survey and the sources published in archaeological survey reports, periodicals and books at home and abroad, aims at providing an analytical discussion of diversity of roofing patterns and techniques including the ground plans of the Mughal mosque in Bengal.
