Abstract:

A review of a millennium of Bengali literary history reveals that the trajectory of Bengali poetry has evolved in response to various socioeconomic, cultural, and political factors. Shifts in governance and societal structures have continually influenced poetic themes and expressions. Consequently, Bengali poetry has diversified in subject matter, form, artistic vision, and linguistic rhythm, establishing a multifaceted literary tradition. The emergence of different ruling entities brought about significant changes in society and culture, impacting poets and their works. Throughout ancient and medieval times, Peasants and workers were crucial in food production and revenue generation. However, most rulers remained indifferent to alleviating their economic hardships or addressing their rights, leading to persistent financial crises for these groups. Given the essential role of farmers and workers in sustaining society, it is reasonable to expect their presence in the thematic and material aspects of poetry. This study investigates whether poets of the time depicted these individuals through the lens of ruling elites or whether the lived experiences of farmers, workers, and other professionals influenced poetic compositions. The article seeks to explore and resolve these inquiries.
